Hand-Dyed Burial Shroud
I began making shrouds as I learned about the natural burial movement — an eco-friendly approach to death care that returns the body to the earth safely. It avoids chemical embalming, concrete vaults, and metal caskets, using biodegradable shrouds or simple wooden coffins instead, helping to create and preserve natural wildlife habitats.
My starting point with every shroud is the earth…. From here, I gather the plants used in the natural dyeing process. Dyeing the fabric takes about 3–4 days, simply because of its scale — each shroud is around 18 feet of cloth. After that, the time it takes to decorate, beautify, and enrich the fabric — to bring the shroud into being — isn't fixed. It depends on circumstance.
No skill or experience is required. This work is accessible to everyone, from infant to elder. All it asks is willingness — an open heart and an intention to co-create. Whatever emerges grows from the unique mix of everyone involved.…and becomes effortlessly beautiful.
The Practical Part
A shroud like this asks for time as much as skill — three to four days of dyeing, plus the unfixed time of decorating and finishing it together. The price reflects materials (fabric, natural dyes, mordant) and my time across the dyeing process and the workshop where we begin the work together, and typically falls between £1,100 and £1,350, depending on the colour and intensity of dye required. This can be discussed and agreed together before we begin.
Time allowance : For the fabric to arrive 1 week, 3 days to prepare and dye the fabric and then the time to decorate the fabric.
